SPEECH DISORDERS

Speech Disorders Affecting Children

Children can experience speech disorders ranging from issues with saying sounds, syllables and words to stuttering and speech fluency. With speech therapy, a specific program is developed to create a strategy that will help the child speak more fluently and communicate more effectively so they can participate in daily activities with more confidence.

Speech Disorders Affecting Adults

Common adult speech disorders include dysarthria, apraxia and adult-onset stuttering. Often, these disorders are caused when the messages from the brain to the mouth are disrupted, leading to ineffective movements of the mouth, jaw and tongue, which limits sound production. Our therapists can develop programs that improve planning, coordination and muscle movement so sound is produced more correctly.

VOICE DISORDERS*

Voice Disorders Affecting Children

Voice therapy involves several techniques designed to help keep the voice healthy as a child ages. These services include teaching good vocal hygiene, limiting behavior that abuses the voice, treatment to alter pitch, volume or breath support for improved voicing.

Voice Disorders Affecting Adults

The goal with our therapy programs is to improve oral communication by treating things that include hoarseness, breathy voice, inability to speak loudly and volume issues. Direct intervention voice treatment involves altering pitch, loudness and breath support.

*Prior to receiving speech/language intervention, individuals must be examined by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Physician.

LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Language Disorders Affecting Children

Children can have difficulty in everything from talking and expressing themselves to understanding what others are trying to communicate to them. Whether a child has trouble with expressive language (asking questions, gesturing, speaking in full sentences, using pronouns and maintaining a conversation) or receptive language (answering questions, understanding gestures, following directions or taking turns when others are talking), our team can assist in developing a therapy program.

Language Disorders Affecting Adults

If you or a loved one is living with aphasia after sustaining an injury to your brain, our speech therapists can assist in helping regain function that has been lost in the language center of your brain. Our programs assist in treating difficulties that include finding words, forming sentences, difficulty reading and writing, and forming words in an order that doesn’t make sense.

SWALLOWING DISORDERS

Whether the difficulties are caused by disease, health condition or as a result of a surgery, swallowing difficulties can lead to a variety of health risks, including poor nutrition, dehydration, pneumonia, chronic lung disease and more. Our therapists can work with you or your family members to help make swallowing safer by altering swallowing mechanics, changing your position or posture while swallowing and making adjustments to food texture and liquid composition.
